Buckeye Hills Highpoint & Gillespie Dam Overlook
January 2, 2022
Buckeye Hills Highpoint Peak in the middle, as we start the hike
Closer in
Look at the east ridge we'd be hiking
A cactus pow-wow
Approacing the ridge
Look up, the white cliff outcrop would be the crux of the climb
The white cliff. We angled left and steeply up the rocks on its left margin. Once above, we had about a thirty-foot knife edge to get across
Summit! Southwest, Woolsey Peak
Southeast view, the canyon we came up
Northeast view
Northwest, the steam plumes at the Palo Verde Nuclear Energy station
Look down at the east ridge and its obstacles
The knife edge bit awaits us
Buckeye Hills HP as we exit
Peak 1253, Gillespie Dam Overlook
The slope we ascended
Volcanic rocks to the top
Summit, view northeast, the Buckeye Hills, but the highpoint may be hidden
North, that's Powers Butte
Northwest, Saddle Mountain, Palo Verde Hills and the Palo Verde Nuclear station
Woolsey Peak again
Look down at the Gila River
The Gillespie Truss Bridge on old US-80, and the Gillespie Dam
A cool bird! An egret, I think
