1978 USSR National Team

1977-78

For the second season in a row, the Soviet Nationals played an exhibition schedule against WHA clubs. This time, the Soviets played a six game set, winning five of the six matches.

Game 1 • January 4, 1978
USSR 7, Edmonton 2

The Soviets took an early lead and never looked back, winning the first game of their six-game, eight-night tour by five goals. Vladimir Petrov had a hat trick for the Soviets.

Game 2 • January 5, 1978
Winnipeg 5, USSR 3

After losing three times to the Soviets a week ago in Japan, the Jets gained a measure of revenge by defeating the Soviets on home ice. The Jets built a 4-0 lead on two goals each by Bobby Hull and Ulf Nilsson. The Soviets cut the lead down to one, but Hull's third goal of the game assured the Jets of the win.

Game 3 • January 7, 1978
USSR 6, Quebec 3

Two goals by Valeri Kharlamov paced the Soviets, who took an early lead and built on it throughout the game. The game was redemption for the Soviets, who were embarrassed by the Nordiques a year ago, losing by five goals.

Game 4 • January 8, 1978
USSR 9, Cincinnati 2

Nine different players scored a goal as the Soviets spotted the Stingers an early 1-0 lead, then poured it on to win convincingly, 9-2. Robbie Ftorek gave the Stingers the early lead. Barry Legge scored a late goal, by which time the Soviets were well out ahead.

Game 5 • January 10, 1978
USSR 8, Indianapolis 3

Two goals each by Alexander Golikov and Igor Kapustin powered the Soviets past Indianapolis. The Racers had an early 2-1 lead on goals by Darryl Maggs and Rusty Patenaude, before the Soviets found their scoring touch, scoring six consecutive goals and sealing the victory.

The depth of the Soviet attack was too much for New England to contain, as seven different players scored for the Soviets in defeating the Whalers. The win was another redemption for the Soviets, who had lost to New England on last year's tour.
