Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1975-76 (by Dan Proudfoot)
Huge size doesn't guarantee goals, but it does bring respect, so San Diego Mariners are happy to have 6-foot-1, 195-pound Jamie Bateman around for another year.
Bateman only played 24 games as a major leaguer in 1974-75. He did pummel his way to 96 minutes in penalties during the brief exposure he had on the ice. Needless to say, he didn't have time for any goals, but he did earn three assists.
Mariners knew what kind of punch they were getting when they drafted Bateman from the Quebec City juniors in 1974. He had 19 goals in his graduating year — and 258 penalty minutes. Mariners' idea is to be ready for any Golden Gloves tournaments that develop at center ice. They hope, of course, that Bateman also evolves into an acceptable winger, as has Dave Schultz, the Philadelphia Flyer badboy who provides a model for the intimidators of the hockey world.
