Bathgate, 41, Returning to Duty With Blazers no byline The Sporting News December 14, 1974
Life might begin at 40 for some people, but for Andy Bathgate it's 41.
The old right winger, a 16-year veteran of the National Hockey League, went back on active duty with the Vancouver Blazers of the WHA late in November just after the team ended a seven-game winless streak.
Bathgate coached the Blazers last season, but was demoted to assistant coach when Joe Crozier took over.
"Andy bugged me for about a month, asking me to let him play," said Crozier. "Finally I agreed. He hasn't got the speed he once had, but that's not what we want from him. We want his intelligence."
Bathgate said he didn't have any ideas about becoming the Player of the Year. "I'm just playing it by ear," he admitted. "I've had my day. I don't want to go out there and make a fool of myself. I'm only going to play as long as I feel I'm making a worthwhile contribution to the club."
Bathgate said he'd been scrimmaging with the team in recent weeks, trying to get the players to move the puck around on the power play. He hadn't been very successful.
"There are some things you just can't do from behind the bench," he declared.
