Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1976-77 (by Dan Proudfoot)
Hockey is full of players who are pestered by their coaches to lose weight. Jean Bernier, however, is under constant pressure to gain.
"A good youngster," says manager Maurice Filion. "I figure in two or three years he could be one of our best defensemen. But, he needs more weight. He started with us at around 160 pounds, and we've had him working on the weights to gain a few pounds. He's around 180 pounds now, maybe 185. In a couple of years he could be 190! He's fast, y'see, but he needs the weight in the corners."
