Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1975-76 (by Dan Proudfoot)
There was an obvious determination about Bruce Boudreau as he played his final year as a junior. Nobody expected him to be with Toronto Marlboros at all, for he had been drafted by the Minnesota Fighting Saints in the summer of 1974, and he had been expected to turn professional.
"For the money they're offering," he said, disappointed in 1974, "J prefer coming back to the Marlies for my final year of eligibility — I'm sure I can play well enough to get drafted high by a NHL team, and then I'll get what I think I'm worth."
Boudreau was impressive, to say the least, in 1974-75. His 165 points led the Ontario Major Junior A League. He was a superb playoff performer, leading the Marlboros to the Canadian junior championship. And then, to his horror, he still wasn't drafted until the third round of NHL selections. Toronto Maple Leafs, heavy already with young centers, picked Boudreau but obviously weren't goint to spend a lot to sign him. So, Boudreau went back to the Fighting Saints and signed.
"I'm satisfied," pronounced Boudreau, "but bitter about what happened. I guess I have to prove myself again."
