Excerpts from Zander Hollander Complete Hockey Handbook, 1975-76 (by Reyn Davis)

Rookie-of-the-Year was an experience ... Scored two hat tricks, notched six game-winning goals for Quebec ... However, too often was pushed around and, in safety's interests, was benched for long periods of time ... Took off-season boxing lessons for obvious reasons ... Nickname is "Buddy" ... Champion of St. Emile residents who can make loud noises ... Teams with talent ... It's been fairly said of Cloutier that as a junior, goals came too easily ... Now he has to work and is finding it tough.

Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1976-77 (by Dan Proudfoot)

Quebec City may be as French as France itself, but most everyone in the city calls young Real Cloutier "Buddy", the English nickname his parents gave him when he was small.

Whatever the name, everyone knows Cloutier, who's probably the most talented 20-year-old in professional hockey. Buddy played his junior hockey for the Quebec Remparts, scoring 93 goals in his final year, and then he joined the Nordiques and continued his progress. Nordiques hoped for 40 goals from him in 1975-76 after 26 in his rookie year: Buddy produced 60, second in the league only to teammate Marc Tardif.

"When Tardif was hurt, he took over as the team leader," says manager Maurice Filion. "He should be one of the greats in hockey history."

Alas, after Cloutier was named the outstanding player in the all-star game (he scored three goals), he said he hopes to play in the National Hockey League someday. "He's under contract to us for another three years," says Filion, hopefully. "By then maybe he will be content to stay."

Player of the Week Honoree, March 14-20, 1977 • WHA Press Release, March 21, 1977

Real Cloutier, who this season has scored more points than any right wing in the history of the World Hockey Association, is the League's most recent Player of the Week.

Cloutier, who is completing his third WHA season with the Quebec Nordiques at the ripe old age of 20, earned the honour by scoring five goals and four assists in four games during the week of March 14 through March 20.

The highlight of Buddy's week was a three goal performance at Cincinnati against the Stingers. The hat trick was his eighth of the season, a WHA record, and the twelfth of his career, leaving him behind only Bobby Hull on the League's all-time list.

To top off his week-long and season-long excellence, Cloutier scored 60 goals last season as well, when he was a second team WHA Al!-Star as a nineteen year old.

On the doorstep of his first WHA scoring championship, Cloutier has earned a place among hockey's premier right wings. For the next decade or more he will undoubtedly be vying with Guy Lafleur and Anders Hedberg for acclamation as the game's finest right wing. Don't bet against Real Cloutier earning more than his share of such attention.

Excerpts from Zander Hollander's Guide to Pro Hockey, 1978-79 (by Reyn Davis)

Shared the league lead for power play goals (20) and tie-breaking goals (11) with Robbie Ftorek and Anders Hedberg, respectively ... Teems with talent ... Quebec fans expect him to be one of the game's superstars ... Very confident, almost cocky ... Sponsors his own softball team ... Signed by Nordiques before his draft year in the NHL ... Tries hard to learn English, a language that is unnecessary in Quebec ... Not a zealous checker
