Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1975-76 (by Dan Proudfoot)

Phoenix Roadrunners didn't rate highly-ranked juniors as a priority in their plans for the 1974-75 year. Cam Connor was the exception, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound junior from the Flin Flon, Man., juniors, who was a must among the candidates for the team.

His size was beyond dispute; his toughness seemed documented in his Flin Flon penalty record, 376 minutes in 1973-74; and his scoring also was satisfactory, with 47 goals and 44 assists in that final year.

Connor, signed to a huge contract, lived up to expectations. Nobody will remember his rookie statistics — nine goals, 19 assists — but that was only because a broken ankle. suffered in February prevented him from getting going.

Connor rushed into the corners, where the real tests of strength oceur in hockey, and came up with the puck more ofter than not. He fought, but only when the situation called for it, not losing his temper unnecessarily.

Montreal Canadiens of the NHL made Connor their first amateur selection in 1974, meaning he was the fifth pick overall in the older league. "I wasn't anxious to go to Montreal," Connor told friends, "because I felt they just wanted me as a tough. With Phoenix, I have the chance to develop as a complete player."

Connor's shot already is the talk of the league. He scored one goal on Ron Grahame, the WHA goalie of the year, when Grahame caught his shot, only to have the catching glove torn from his hand and enter the net.

Excerpts from Zander Hollander Complete Hockey Handbook, 1975-76 (by Reyn Davis)

Rookie season marred by a broken ankle which cost him 21 games ... Hung some mean lickings on certain opponents including San Diego's Ted Scharf, Chicago's Keith Kokkola and New England's Fred O'Donnell ... Wants to be considered a hockey player, not a fighter ... Montreal Canadiens' first round draft choice in 1974, but became a Roadrunner instead for an estimated $750,000 for five years ... Drives a loaded Trans-Am ... Top football prospect at tight end during high school.

Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1976-77 (by Dan Proudfoot)

... The impact the 22-year-old Connor has had since he chose Phoenix over the Montreal Canadiens as a place to play. He was worried Canadiens wanted him strictly for his muscle --- he had 376 minutes in penalties in his last junior year. Roadrunners appreciate his toughness, too, but under coach Al Rollins look for him to improve on his 1975-76 total of 18 goals.
