Due to the injuries to Abrahamsson and Landon, the Whalers were forced to call in Boston University goaltender Pat Devlin as a backup for the second game.
The New Englanders then received permission to summon netminder Gaye Cooley from Charlotte of the Southern Hockey
League, but with one main stipulation. He was to play only if Raeder got hurt or was unable to play.
Originally, the only goalkeeper the Whalers could have activated was Ron Docken, who played with Johnstown of the North American League. But the youngster was tied into a movie contract — the film "Slapshot" is being made in Johnstown — and had to turn down the Whalers.
