Player of the Week Honoree, March 21-27, 1977 WHA Press Release, March 28, 1977
Right Wing Bill "Cowboy" Flett of the Edmonton Oilers has been named as the World Hockey Association Player of the Week.
In naming Flett, the WHA Media departed from their recent norm of selecting one of the League's young, budding stars, and chose a 33 year old veteran who has rejuvenated his career since joining Edmonton.
Last week Flett continued a recent scoring binge with which he has helped his team gain a slim edge over its rivals for the final Western Division Playoff berth. In four games, Cowboy popped five goals, three of which were scored in a hat tirck performance at New England. Edmonton's 5-4 road win in that game might prove monumental in their bid for the playoffs. Flett first propelled the Oilers to their big effort with the game's opening goal, and later capped it with the game winner.
Scoring is nothing new to Flett, of course. He was the producer of four 20 goal seasons in the NHL, including a 43 goal effort for Philadelphia in 1972-73.
Now Flett, who joined the Oilers in December, is showing that he has not lost his touch. Bill has scored 30 times in but 43 WHA games. He is the
leading goal scorer in his club despite having played more than 30 fewer games than many of his teammates.
In any event, just as the WHA has created a domain for the game's young lions, the Cloutiers, Sobchuks, and Napiers, it has offered a home to some of hockey's proven talents. This week the WHA media honoured one of those in Bill Flett.
