Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1975-76 (by Dan Proudfoot)
There may never be another pro hockey player come from Staten Island, N.Y., but Nick Fotiu made the WHA in 1974-75 after proving that he may be a heavyweight boxer, but he also knows how to skate a little.
Fotiu is a graduate of the Metropolitan New York hockey league and, incidentally, Golden Gloves boxing competition. In his first WHA season he earned two goals, two assists, and 144 penalty minutes. "If he gets a little better with the puck, he can be a very important asset," says manager-coach Jack Kelley.

Excerpts from Zander Hollander Complete Hockey Handbook, 1975-76 (by Reyn Davis)
New York City's big hope to achieve fame and stardom in Major League hockey ... Don't hold your breath ... Nick's forte is using his fists ... Two goals and two assists aren't much for 67 games, but the Whalers knew he wasn't another Andre Lacroix when they signed him ... Born in Staten Island, New York ... A club leader in penalties with 144 minutes ... Won a New York City amateur boxing title in the heavyweight class ... Grew up with one ambition in hockey — to thump Ted Green, a one-time boisterous Bruin who drew the wrath of many Ranger fans in New York ... When Nick finally hit the bigs he couldn't carry out his project because up until this year, Teddy was not only his teammate, but the club captain as well ... Anyway, upon hearing the story, Green just laughed derisively.
