Excerpts from Zander Hollander's Guide to Pro Hockey, 1975-76 (by Reyn Davis)
Kept getting smashed in the mouth in 1974-75 ... Worst injury occurred when Ken Baird of Edmonton struck him in the face with his stick, jarring teeth loose, ripping his gums and splitting his lip ... Determined, he kept playing, protcting the sore area with bars off a football helmet ... First injury was healing nicely when he ran into another stick ... Got so bad his wife was reluctant to greet him as the team came home from road trips ... She was afraid she wouldn't recognize him ... Always relaxed, but is perpetual motion on the ice

Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1976-77 (by Dan Proudfoot)
... little used as a member of the New England Whalers, responded immediately when the Mariners gave up a second-round draft choice to get him early in 1975-76. French scored 25 goals for the Mariners, compared to 12 for the Hartford, Conn., team the year before. What's more, he continued to contribute after suffering a broken nose, which forced him to wear a special helmet with a face mask. As long as the Mariners had plans, French surely was part of them.
