Excerpts from Zander Hollander Complete Hockey Handbook, 1975-76 (by Reyn Davis)

Funniest man on the team ... Extremely popular with management, teammates and fans alike ... A tireless worker who relishes the heavy going ... Attended University of New Hampshire ... Left-shooting right winger who formed one third of Phoenix's hottest line with Robbie Ftorek and Dennis Sobchuk ... Only Michel Cormier scored more goals among the Roadrunners ... Said to be Sandy Hucul's kind of hockey player: he checks closely, uses body effectively and plays well consistently.

Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1976-77 (by Dan Proudfoot)

John Gray undoubtedly could succeed as a regular on the basis of his non-scoring skills. He's the sort of winger every team cherishes on the basis of his combative corner work and his checking, and such a player can get by with a few goals.

The fact that the 27-year-old Gray has blossomed as a scorer in the past two seasons, then, is a complete bonus, of great use to Gray when it comes time to negotiate a new contract. Gray got 35 goals and 33 assists in his rookie year with Phoenix after a frustrating career in the lower levels of the NHL Toronto Maple Leaf system. In 1975-76 he scored as often while increasing his assists to 45 — testimony to his continuing awareness that setups are every bit as important as goals.
