Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1975-76 (by Dan Proudfoot)

One of the few pleasant memories Danny Gruen has of the Michigan Stags is that of Johnny Wilson's coaching. With Stags folded, then, he was happy to follow Wilson to Cleveland. "The reason I'm here," he told reporters when he signed, "is Johnny Wilson."

Wilson did everything he could to help while Gruen's wife was suffering from a severe illness, allowing Gruen to practise at irregular hours and so on. Wilson was ripe for criticism for allowing Gruen special privileges, too, because the left wing had been lured away from Detroit Red Wings with a big contract and was expected to be a major attraction for the Stags.

"We'll have a lot more scoring from our left side," said manager Jack Vivian, "because of Gruen, Lyle Moffat and Gary Jarrett. Jarrett isn't a youngster but he should play like one, because he can't have another year like last season when he had a hip injury and then came back to hit every goal post and crossbar in the league."

Excerpts from Zander Hollander's Guide to Pro Hockey, 1975-76 (by Reyn Davis)

Left-winger acquired in the Baltimore-Chicago going-out-of-business draft ... Played for Johnny Wilson for most of last year in Michigan ... Was send to Winnipeg when he balked at moving to Baltimore ... Spent his first two seasons of career in the Detroit Red Wings organization, sharing a Central Hockey League scoring title with Cleveland teammate Lyle Moffat while with Fort Worth in 1972-73 ... Accoring to Crusader's GM Jack Vivian, Gruen has the tendency to "mingle", in other words, he's aggressive

Excerpts from Zander Hollander Complete Hockey Handbook, 1976-77 (by Reyn Davis)

"He possesses a lot of positive ingredients" said Danny's coach, Johnny Wilson ... Among them are a hard shot, good speed, a strong will to win and a touch of bravery found in only a few players ... Stood in front of Bobby Hull slap shots for 25 games, forming screens, in the Golden Jet's 77-goal onslaught in 1974-75 ... Accomplished a rarity in the minors in his first season as a pro, scoring 35 goals and earning 45 assists for Fort Worth to win a share of the Central Hockey League scoring championship while leading the league in penalties at the same time ... Good golfer ... Nickname is Bert after a Sesame Street character.
