• Cousin of Paul Hoganson.

Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1975-76 (by Dan Proudfoot)

Los Angeles Kings' owner Jack Kent Cooke was surveying his hapless skaters, one day four or five years ago, when his eyes lit up at the sight of one young defenceman.

"Dale Hoganson," Cooke said then, "reminds me of Bobby Orr, the way he skates with the puck. He's a good one." Soon afterward, however, Cooke allowed his propensity for mass trades to cancel his enthusiasm and Hoganson found himself moving from Los Angeles, where he was a premier defenceman, to Montreal and Les Canadiens, where he was merely one of a crowd of talented defenders. The fact was, he seldom got on the ice in Montreal. So he opted for Quebec and the WHA.

Hoganson is only 26, despite his vast experience with the fortunes of life, and at last he's found a home where his talents are properly appreciated. "He's an honest worker," says Quebec manager Maurice Filion, "and when J.C. Tremblay was out with an injury last year, he was our No. 1 defenceman."

Despite the fact this is Hoganson's third year as an English minority on a French-speaking team, he still hasn't mastered Canada's second language. "I do know he has a French girl friend," says Filion, which is not a bad start for a boy from the prairies.

Excerpts from Zander Hollander Complete Hockey Handbook, 1975-76 (by Reyn Davis)

Changed his style and had his best season ever in 1974-75 ... adopted a scientific approach, practiced and preached by close friend, J.-C. Tremblay ... An excellent puck carrier ... Born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, making him the only Nordique born west of Toronto ... Spends his summers on his ranch, raising cattle ... still struggling to learn French, the language spoken among the Nordiques ... Has history of two bad shoulders, banged up driving forwards into boards ... has tempered his style, much to the relief of forwards around the league ... Nickname is "Red" after the color of his hair.
