Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1975-76 (by Dan Proudfoot)

In the old days of the National Hockey League, before expansion led to truly open draft of young players, Montreal Canadiens were entitled each year to choose the best French-Canadian players.

Rejean Houle and Marc Tardif were the final two players entering the Canadiens system under the old system, which was intended to maintain the distinctive flavour of the Montreal team.

Houle, an excellent skater, gained most of his fame in the NHL when he was assigned to check Bobby Hull, then'of the Chicago Black Hawks, through a playoff series. Houle was a spectacular success, matching Hull stride for stride. With the Nordiques, however, he's been able to develop all of his skills so he scored 40 goals and 52 assists in 1974-75, second best on the team behind his linemate, Bernier.

Ironically, Houle's prominence with the Nordiques coincides with the team challenging Canadiens for the affections of the province of Quebec.

Excerpts from Zander Hollander Complete Hockey Handbook, 1975-76 (by Reyn Davis)

Every team should have a "Reggie" Houle ... always friendly, ever interested, concerned, quick to congratulate, very slow to pat his own back ... Swift right winger, exciting to watch ... Doesn't make a habit of cashing in his best scoring opportunities, but still managed to score 40 goals in 1974-75, a personal high ... Likes the life of small towns ... romanced by Montreal Canadiens, who desperately want him back ... Has asked Nordiques to extend his contract for five years at its present terms — $110,000 per annum ... Close, caring friend of introverted teammate Mark Tardif.
