Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1975-76 (by Dan Proudfoot)
Brent Hughes finally wants to end the ceaseless travelling that has characterized his professional career. Thus, when he agreed to terms with San Diego Mariners it was for three years, no less.
Hughes played for the NHL Kansas City Scouts last season. Before that his NHL teams were, in rapid order, Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues, Philadelphia Flyers and Los Angeles Kings — with a few minor league stops thrown in along the way. When he was drafted by the expansion Scouts last season, then, he lost no time in notifying them he was playing out his option and agreed to a final move to San Diego. Scouts still recognized his leadership qualities by naming him alternate captain for the year.

Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1976-77 (by Dan Proudfoot)
Brent Hughes had negative feelings after one season with the NHL Kansas City Scouts. He'd had enough of travelling after playing in five different NHL uniforms, so he switched to the Mariners, insisting on a three-year deal for the sake of security.
So much for security. Scouts and Mariners both folded in 1976, as typical examples of the tight economy which suddenly was squeezing the sports world. Hughes at least made his presence felt by playing strongly on defense — strongly enough, undoubtedly, that some other team would pick up his contract if Mariners were unable to get a fresh start.

Excerpts from Zander Hollander's Guide to Pro Hockey, 1978-79 (by Reyn Davis)
Chosen by his teammates as the Bulls' most valuable player last season, polling 19 of the 24 votes cast ... One of hockey's class people ... Nickname is "Hugsy" ... Can look ferocious with his heavy moustache and afro-style haircut and doleful eyes ... Very steady hockey player, noted more for his defensive play than his offensive skills ... Rarely gives up the puck ... Deserved all-star consideration last season
