Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1975-76 (by Dan Proudfoot)

Marc Tardif, the fleet Quebec Nordiques skater, has played long enough to have been bushwacked by the biggest hitters in both leagues.

Never, however, has he been hit harder than by John Hughes, the Stinger defenceman who played his rookie WHA campaign with Phoenix Roadrunners. "He would have won the WHA penalty crown," says coach Terry Slater enthusiastically, "except he got hurt and missed the last game of the season."

Hughes' 201 penalty minutes were the second highest total in the league. More significant, undoubtedly, was the fact that his defensive rating, plus 49, was better than any of the top scoring defencemen, meaning he shows amazing maturity for a 21-year-old.

Excerpts from Zander Hollander's Guide to Pro Hockey, 1975-76 (by Reyn Davis)

"This guy," said Stingers principle builder, Jerry Rafter, "is the best defenseman who's graduated from junior hockey in the past five years" ... Rafter's glowing assessment of Hughes is supported in some quarters of the WHA, especially around Phoenix, where he anchored the Roadrunners defense in his rookie season and their inaugural year in 1974-75 ... Has great disdain for losing ... Had the highest efficiency rating in Phoenix, matching Robbie Ftorek, +49 ... Missed being the league bad man by two minutes (203-201), finishing behind Gord Gallant, then of Minnesota ... Only three WHA players attracted more first place votes for Rookie-of-the-Year — Anders Hedberg, of Winnipeg Gary MacGregor of Chicago, and Ulf Nilsson of Winnipeg.

Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1976-77 (by Dan Proudfoot)

Cincinnati had great expectations that John Hughes just couldn't live up to in 1975-76. In Phoenix the year before he'd been a leader in the plus-minus figures coaches value so highly (based on the number of goals scored by a team and against it while the player in question is on the ice) with a +49 rating. At Cincinnati he was -31. What should be remembered, though, is that Hughes was hampered by injuries for much of the season. At one point his roommate, Rick Dudley, had to help him out of bed because of his bad back, but Hughes went to the rink and played. So his attitude isn't in question and neither is his skill. He should return to his highly-rated form on defense in 1976-77.
