Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1976-77 (by Dan Proudfoot)

Jerry Rafter, Stingers' director of player personnel, practically uses up his extensive vocabulary in an instant speech when the subject of Dave Inkpen comes up. But not quite.

"He's the kind of guy you'd like to see going out with your daughter, if you had a daughter," Rafter starts off, describing the young defenseman's character. "And what an attitude. If the team loses, he races off to his room. He can't stand it. We're very fortunate to have him. He was drafted by us and by New York Islanders three years ago and neither team signed him immediately. He played on the same team as coach Slater's brother in the minors, and then we signed him.

"With Inky paired with Ron Plumb — who, incidentally, should be an all-star but keeps getting overlooked — we'd have a great blueline combination. But the fact that they're our steadiest defensemen is why we keep them separated, to get the most value from them."
