Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1976-77 (by Dan Proudfoot)
Al Karlander had a date with Tom Webster for the 1976 Avco World Trophy playoffs but, unfortunately, was unable to keep it. This may have been to Webster's relief, but it was the worst possible turn of events for the Racers.
"Al is one of those hard-working guys who keeps a team going," says Racer coach Jacques Demers. "Tell him to check somebody and he'll cover him completely. All year long he was assigned to Tom Webster.
"Then in the playoffs Karlander was out with a severe knee twist, and of course Webster was New England's top scorer. That tells you something."
Karlander, a Michigan Tech graduate, has scored as many as 30 goals in the minor leagues. But Racers were perfectly happy with his 19 last year because of his superior checking.
