Veli-Pekka Ketola
Height: 6-3

Regular Season & Playoff Scoring Record (key)

Jets couldn't figure out how to use Ketola in 1974-75. The massive skills of the huge center from Finland were undeveloped, if not totally wasted, because of his difficulty in adjusting to North American hockey.
Now, Jets feel they have the answer.
"We want to let him play his own kind of game," explains Jets hockey manager Rudy Pilous. "We tried making him play our way and it didn't work. Let him go his way and you have a star player."
"In our system we have the centers do the forechecking. So we were asking Ketola to go in first, something he had never done before. His way is to have his two wings go in first with him trailing, so he drifts into scoring position with his fantastic shot.
"Ihat's the idea. We think it's going to work."

Has few peers, if any, as a stick handler... despite his size, he is often missed entirely by a defenseman... Adjustment to pro game hasn't been easy, but he's winning the battle... "Must hit more," he constantly reminds himself... Considered by some hockey experts to be the best centerman from Free Europe... A national hero in Finland... Plagued by a recurring knee injury in his rookie season... Centered Jets No. 2 line with Perry Miller on his left and Howie Young on his right... Graduate of Finnish Army team.
