Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1975-76 (by Dan Proudfoot)
When Bruce MacGregor left the New York Rangers in 1974, he was one of the most valued members of that highly-ranked organization. He'd been a leader in the playoffs, particularly against the swift Montreal Canadiens, but Ranger manager-coach Emile Francis was in the unfortunate position of not being able to compete with MacGregor's home town Oilers.
"Bruce is 34," says Francis. "We would have loved to have kept him. But, at his age, moving was the best thing for him."
Ironically, MacGregor was somewhat of a disappointment at Edmonton, scoring 24 goals and 28 assists but never performing up to potential. "He was tired after playing for Team Canada," says Oiler manager Bill Hunter, "and he had that injured shoulder. Don't discount Bruce yet."
