MacKinnon Jets' Star of Future no byline The Hockey News December 8, 1978
The Winnipeg Jets have treated the amateur hockey draft somewhat coolly in recent years. They preferred to go with the experienced players but things appear to have changed with the WHA team.
This season they picked off several promising youngsters in a bidding war with the NHL and one of these acquisitions in whom they have a lot of hope for the future is defenseman Paul MacKinnon.
The 20-year-old Brantford, Ont, native was believed headed for the Washington Caps in the NHL after they drafted him. But MacKinnon opted for the WHA Jets instead after a brilliant final junior year with Peterborough Petes and now the Winnipeg Jets feels it has uncovered a future star in the six-foot, 190-pound defenseman.
In becoming the first Junior the Jets have signed since 1973, MacKinnon appears to have made the transition from junior hockey to the pros with relative ease. Jets' coach Larry Hillman says MacKinnon plays with his head and admits he's one of the team's best rearguards at the moment.
Aggressive in his own end, MacKinnon is more of a defensive defenseman. He is still looking for his first pro goal and says he's slightly worried about the offensive end of his game.
The Jets think he'll do just fine playing defense the way he does now.
