Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1976-77 (by Dan Proudfoot)
Coach Johnny Wilson liked the way Bernie MacNeil played against his Cleveland Crusaders. Well, not so much at the time, perhaps, but he took note of the many ways MacNeil was effective, and after the season was over set out to get him. W!lson was ready to pay a price. He traded Russ Walker, a 23-goal scorer, to Cincinnati Stingers for MacNeil, a 15-goal man.
"Look at how many short-handed goals he got," says Wilson. "Five of them, and we can use a penalty killer like that."
Wilson already had a respected penalty killer in his lineup, Terry Holbrook. But any team appreciates two penalty-killing specialists who can fill in at other positions.
