• Winner, Ben Hatskin Trophy (Best Goaltender), 1973-74.

Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1976-77 (by Dan Proudfoot)

The tip-off about Don McLeod is his goaltender's stick. He has the blade bent into a wicked curve, making it all the better to shoot with. Here's a guy who obviously wanted to be a goal-scorer, but got stuck in the nets. And he's an excellent goaltender, always mentioned as a strength of the Calgary team and once the best in the league, with Houston in 1973-74. Still, the most amazing statistic concerning McLeod is that he got 13 assists in 1975-76 regular season play and added another in the playoffs. Some defensemen don't get 14 points in a year but McLeod, thinking offensively, is always ready to snap a pass forward. One of these years, he may even get a goal.

Excerpts from Zander Hollander Complete Hockey Handbook, 1976-77 (by Reyn Davis)

One of a kind ... Broke all scoring records for goaltenders by earning 13 assists last season ... Barely missed scoring the first goal by a Major League goaltender in January when his rink-length shot almost caught Edmonton rookie Frank Turnbull out of his net ... Nickname is "Smokey" because of an ever-present cigarette off the ice ... A WHA original ... Uses a curved stick for shooting purposes ... He is fed passes by his teammates who head down the ice to take his return passes ... Named WHA's top goaltender in 1974 as a Houston Aero.
