Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1975-76 (by Dan Proudfoot)
Toronto Toros paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to hire big-name players to attract new fans. Ironically, though, Lou Nistico, short, wide and anxious, proved to be the favorite Toro.
Nistico played only the last 29 games of the WHA schedule but the fans accepted him completely. He had 11 goals and 11 assists and he seemed to beam with pleasure every time he gained a point. He was rough, but fun to watch. Nistico was a first for Toros — the first player to become the talk of Toronto sports fans on the basis of performance, not disappointment, In the playoffs, he was just as effective.
Nistico was only one of three youngsters who moved up to Toros after playing most of the 1974-75 season with the Mohawk Valley Comets of the North American Hockey League. Peter Marrin, who had 33 goals and 45 assists in 54 games with Mohawk Valley, and Jeff Jacques, who had 25 goals and 29 assists in 38 minor league games, ought to develop prominence in coming years. Jacques, in fact, made an immediate impact by scoring four goals in his first game as a Toro.
