Excerpts from Zander Hollander Complete Hockey Handbook, 1976-77 (by Reyn Davis)

Made a significant contribution in his rookie season ... Handles a puck very well, shoots hard but not often enough ... Nicknamed Broadway Joe ... Tied Andre Lacroix for most San Diego short handed goals, 3 ... Required more than 100 stitches to close cuts to his face following a car mishap the night after the Mariners were eliminated from the playoffs ... Has improved the Mariners depth immensely.

Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1976-77 (by Dan Proudfoot)

At the age of 15, Joe Noris left his Denver, Colorado, home for Kitchener, Ontario. He wanted to learn how to play hockey. He'd met most of the fellows who played for the University of Denver hockey team and they were Canadians, so Noris decided to go north for his own education — in the company of Canada's best junior hockey players.

"I wasn't even homesick," Noris recalls. "The way I looked at it was that I was going away to learn to be a hockey player. There's just nothing comparable to Canada's junior hockey in the U.S."

His education completed, Noris returned to the U.S.A., playing briefly for St. Louis Blues and Buffalo Sabres but not really cashing in on his earlier travels. He was at Syracuse when Mariner coach Ron Ingram signed him, and in his first year in the WHA Noris garnered 28 goals and 40 assists — highly respectable by either Canadian or U.S. standards.
