Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1975-76 (by Dan Proudfoot)

Bill Preston's father is the manager of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, who play in the smallest city of the Canadian Football League but win the national championship fairly regularly. Bill attended the University of Denver to play hockey, not football, though, and he was able to move directly into the Aero lineup and score 20 goals in 1974-75, his rookie year, along with center Terry Ruskowski and right wing Don Larway. Ruskowski and Larway, incidentally, were also linemates at Swift Current, Alta., before turning pro. Preston had Ron Grahame, the WHA's outstanding goalie of 1974-75, as a teammate at university.

Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1976-77 (by Dan Proudfoot)

If the knock against the Houston Aeros is that they're too old, Rich Preston is one of the players who renders the criticism laughable. Preston, 24, like Terry Ruskowski, 22, Don Larway, 22, and John Tonelli, 19, is proof of the wisdom shown by manager-coach Bill Dineen in adding a youngster or two each year to a roster heavy in veterans.

Ruskowski and Mark Howe led Houston scorers in the playoffs with 16 points apiece. Preston had four goals and six assists, after scoring 22 goals and 33 assists in the regular season and earning the second-best defensive record on the team.

... "Rich is a complete hockey player," says Jack Stanfield, "and he's improved every year."
