Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1976-77 (by Dan Proudfoot)
For most of 10 years Doug Roberts' defensive abilities were sound enough to keep him in the major leagues. There were sceptical fans, however, who believed that the only reason the Whalers employed him in 1975-76 was to help convince his kid brother, Gordie, to join the team.
"Doug, who's a heck of a guy, a real team-man, got some really vicious letters when he had some trouble with his play in the middle of the season," says Harry Neale. "But he came on, and in the playoffs he and his brother had the best defensive records on the team. He's a very useful guy."
