Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1976-77 (by Dan Proudfoot)
Plenty of rookies enter the major leagues with fanfare, but the background to Gord Roberts' arrival as a 17-year-old was practically gunfire. The signing of the youngster, directly against league policy, cost Whalers a $100,000 fine and their first choice in the 1976 amateur draft. Whalers committed the faux pas of turning Roberts professional without acquiring him in a draft. And coach Harry Neale thinks it was worth it.
"He may be the best young player in the league. He's so young it makes you shudder, because his October, 1976, birthday only makes him 19 and he already has incredible poise. Of course Gordie had his rough spots in his first year, but what I liked about him is that when his junior hockey tricks stopped working, he didn't. He has a good attitude."
