Jim Shaw is a man with two professions, trained as he is to be a pharmacist and with four years of experience as a pro goaltender.
Most of 1974-75 was enough to drive him into the drugstore business as a fulltime career, for he was one of three Toro goaltenders and Gilles Gratton was getting most of the starting assignments. Everytime Shaw began to put solid games together, something seemed to happen to put him back in his role as an extra. In November he played three games in a row and suffered a broken finger. In January it was a bruised eye.
Shaw, 30, got his break in the playoffs when the unpredictable Gratton lasted only 36 minutes of the opening game and allowing five goals. Shaw took over, appearing in five playoff games before Toros were eliminated. The third Toronto goaltender is Les Binkley, who's 41, so there's little question of which of his professions is going to dominate.

Best goaltender in pro hockey with a degree in pharmacy ... Probably the only one ... Quiet and studious ... Nickname is "Drugstore" ... Surrendered first of Bobby Hull's record 77 goals last year ... Attended University of Saskatchewan ... Missed 1969-70 season to finish his degree ... Teammates love to cause a stir on commercial flights by calling him "drug man" ... Played superbly in playoffs ... Will bear the responsibility in 1975, now that Gilles Gratton has signed with the NHL Blues ... Wears contact lenses.
