Duke For The Defense (excerpt) by Vic Grant The Hockey Spectator April 6, 1973
The one noticeable thing the Jets lacked this year is a robust defenseman who hits with a ton. They brought in John Shmyr on a five-game trial in an effort to find a hitter of note.
Shmyr is the brother of Paul, who's the robust defenseman and captain of the Cleveland Crusaders. John came to the Jets from the Shmyr Flyers, a family-business-sponsored intermediate team in British Columbia.
The Jets tried to get Shmyr when they were building the team last fall, but he declined on the ground of family and business ties. When Bob Ash went on the injury shelf, though, Shmyr answered the call.
He talked to Bobby Hull Wednesday long distance. He arrived Thursday and was playing Friday. The first game, or two, or three, wouldn't leave room for a fair assessment, but the jump may prove to be too big for this year.
