Smith Wages St. Botolph Street War (excerpts) • by Dick Dew • The Hockey Spectator • April 6, 1973

... Because what Guy Smith is trying to do is make a place for himself in the ragged pro hockey business, Smith is pretty much of a neophyte among Jack Kelley's skaters, a presumably green college kid playing with and against men whose hockey experience in some instances dates back to when he was a [child].

Guy, who until recently had been in and out of the Whaler lineup like a fiddler's elbow, learned several painful lessons ... but has recently been doing a little teaching of his own.

For one thing, he found out that the college kid had to make his mark and hammer his way if be was going to stay with the professionals.

... Guy admittedly didn't have much of a training camp with the Whalers as the high-priced spread of veteran pros generally sent the collegiate types sprawling in their belated arrival.

Smith had tours with the Springfield team until it went broke and later skated with the Rhode Island Eagles, also of the Eastern League, before rejoining the Harpoonists when John Cunniff was hurt.

By the time he got back to the team at Boston Arena (on Saint Botolph Street) some of the basic pro hockey lessons were firmly imbedded.

"I've got to keep my head up when I'm carrying the puck, I've got to remember that for the sake of my hide. It's the one big thing I've learned in the pros."

Guy, who measures 6-foot-1 and close to 190 pounds, began running at people, He joined a fourth New England line best described as the "buzz saw", a checking unit made up of John (Don't call me Jake) Danby, another newly-minted college kid, and Tommy Earl, a former Colgate skater who had three years of pro experience before boarding the Whaleboat.

"I took some real lumps at first but now I'm remembering to keep my head up." Smith jokes grimly.

Smith, who is a nephew of Jay Silverheels, alias Tonto, the Lone Ranger's TV sidekick, is making good progress for a guy who just got out of the classroom.

"That line has been skating the hell out of the other teams and breaking up their play," Kelley said, "They're playing so well they're playing more."

"Guy can skate with anyone and he can give and take checks, He's got a good frame and when he fills out a litte, he's going to be great.

"He's already benefiting from his pro experience, He's going to be a real good one some one of these days,"
