Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1976-77 (by Dan Proudfoot)
Toronto Marlboros did their best to prevent John Tonelli from playing for Houston Aeros in 1976-77, going to court to get an injunction to prevent the 18-year-old from turning pro. Mr. Justice John Morden of the Supreme Court of Ontario turned down the application, however, and thus it was that Tonelli found himself centering Gord and Mark Howe instead of playing in the smaller cities of Ontario.
"I think that John was a little nervous and over awed at first," says Bill Dineen, Aeros' manager-coach. "But look at the
way he came on. He was great in the playoffs, getting 14 points in 17 games, and the amazing thing is he's still only 19."
