Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1976-77 (by Dan Proudfoot)
The standard Edmonton pattern — former Edmonton-area player returns after NHL stint for a big contract which proves to be undeserved — does not apply in the case of Norm Ullman.
First, Ullman is by far the biggest name to return to the northern city. He's one of the top scorers in NHL history. Second, Ullman wasn't out to get rich quick. Toronto Maple Leafs had decided they couldn't afford him because they thought he could no longer play at peak form night after night. So Ullman was in the position of looking for a job in 1975-76. Third, and most significant, is the fact that Ullman never stopped working after arriving at Edmonton. He was the team's top scorer with 31 goals and 56 assists. His attitude was exemplary.
The only thing wrong with Norm Ullman, it seems, is his age. Dec. 26, 1976, is his 41st birthday. And his game demands so much energy that pessimists are expecting him to run out of gas at any time. But Stormin' Norman, is aware of the importance of keeping his legs strong and leads pro hockey joggers in the off-season.
