Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1975-76 (by Dan Proudfoot)

In the unique WHA auction sale late in the spring of 1975, players left over from the two teams that had collapsed were sold at a fraction of their contract value.

The reason for the sale, really, was that the league didn't want to get stuck with paying the full amount of some of the players' huge contracts.

So, the healthy WHA teams were invited to bid. "You didn't bother picking up these guys in the first place," the WHA auctioneer said, in effect, "maybe it was because they're too high-priced. Make an offer. Highest bid gets the player."

Jim Watson, for instance, was working for about $60,000 a year as a Chicago Cougar defenceman. The contract was guaranteed by the league, which offered him in the auction.

Toronto Toros, New England Whalers and Indianapolis Racers all were anxious to acquire Watson. Nordiques finally won him with a bid of $46,000, meaning this season they'll pay him that portion of his salary and the league will add the other $14,000.

"We felt it was important to get Watson," said Nordique manager Maurice Filion. "I had to bid high. We needed a defenceman with his size (6-foot-2, 210 pounds) if we hoped to become a more aggressive team."
