Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1976-77 (by Dan Proudfoot)
It was a relief for goaltender Wayne Wood when he was traded to the Toronto Toros. He had to look at it positively: he might get shell-shocked in the Toronto goal, but at least he'd be getting a chance to play. In Calgary he'd been Don McLeod's backup, and the veteran McLeod got to start nearly all of the games. It was no position for a 24-year-old who hoped to make a name for himself in goal. So Wood arrived in Toronto and played extremely well ... and then, to his amazement, Toros completed negotiations to bring in John Garrett. It's the same old
story again, likely to continue in Birmingham.
"John Garrett likes a lot of action," manager-coach Gilles Leger says, "so it's unfortunate for Wayne, but he's a good team man with a lot of natural skills, so he's great insurance for us." Count on Wood, however, to put up a battle for the Number-1 starting position.
