Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1975-76 (by Dan Proudfoot)

Years ago, when Pittsburgh Penguins of the NHL were desperately trying to stir up fan interest and getting nowhere, Bob Woytowich's Polish Army formed spontaneously and filled a section of the rink, cheering their hero on. Woytowich isn't of Polish descent, but, never mind, the point remains that he's one player with whom the average fan can relate.

"A positive thinker," says coach Gerry Moore, "and you have no idea how difficult it is to find winners like him, and how important they are."

Winnipeg Jets considered Woytowich expendable after acquiring Thommie Bergman in December, 1974. With Racers, the 34-year-old defenceman immediately became a leader, steadying his blue-line partners and cutting Racers' losing margins, if not making the team a winner. Woytowich injured a knee, slamming into a goalpost, late in the season but continued to play. Coach Moore counts on a healthy Woytowich maintaining leadership as Racers develop, and, who knows — Indianapolis may yet have a division of Bob Woytowhich's Polish Army.

Excerpts from Zander Hollander Complete Hockey Handbook, 1975-76 (by Reyn Davis)

Brought stability to Racers defense in mid-season, following acquisition from Winnipeg ... seems destined to be the Racers next captain ... has definite leadership qualities, recognizing young and old, strong and weak on each team ... A throwback to the days of the defensive defenseman ... Scoring output is pitifully low, but management considers his real value to be the prevention of goals ... Carries a long stick ... Nicknamed "Augie" by Pittsburgh friends who thought he was a dead ringer for National League umpire Augie Donatelli ... Signed a new contract with the Racers.
