Aeros Rally to Defeat St. Louis
in First WHA-NHL Contest

HOUSTON: Don Larway's two goals and Rich Preston's goal and two assists helped the Aeros overcome a two-goal deficit in the third period and defeat the St. Louis Blues in the first-ever WHA-NHL exhibition contest. Terry Ruskowski, Gord Labossiere and Poul Popiel each had two points for Houston, while Barclay Plager had two goals and an assist for St. Louis.

Leads Roadrunners Win

PHOENIX: The Phoenix Roadrunners made their big-league debut with an 8-2 rout of visiting San Diego, who were also making their debut after two seasons in New York and New Jersey. Robbie Ftorek led the Runner attack with a hat trick.

Racers Fall to
Stags in Opener

INDIANAPOLIS: Two late goals by the visiting Michigan Stags sent the Indianapolis Racers to their first loss in their debut game. Marc Tardif had two points for the Stags, while Steve Richardson and Bobby Whitlock scored the two Racer goals. The Stags were also making their debut after two seasons based in Los Angeles.

San Diego Wins First Game

SAN DIEGO: Wayne Rivers' second goal of the game came with 2 seconds remaining in the second period, and was the tie-breaker as San Diego won going away, defeating Houston 6-2. Rivers also had an assist, while Andre Lacroix and Ray Adduono had a goal and an assist each.

Steve Andrascik's Three Points

INDIANAPOLIS: The Indianapolis Racers won their first game ever, beating visiting Québec behind Steve Andrascik's goal and two assists. Rich Pumple had a goal and an assist, while goaltender Andy Brown stopped 27 of 30 shots and assisted on Bob Sicinski's second-period goal.

Goals in Big League Debut

HOUSTON: Toronto rookie Jeff Jacques made an auspicious debut with a four-goal effort against the Houston Aeros, leading the Toros to a 7-4 victory. Three of his goals came in the third period as Toronto broke the game open with a five-goal outburst. Jacques also had an assist.

HOUSTON: Andre Hinse became the third player in WHA history to score five goals in a contest as he paced Houston to an easy 9-2 romp over visiting Edmonton. Gordie Howe chipped in with a goal and two assists.

Assists as Blades Win First

BALTIMORE: Steve West assisted on four goals as the new Baltimore Blades won their first game since being formed two weeks earlier to replace the failed Michigan Stags. Bill Evo and Gary Veneruzzo had two goals apiece and Arnie Brown had a goal and an assist for the victorious Blades. Gordie Howe had two assists for Houston, while Poul Popiel had a goal and an assist.

Bobby Hull Scores 50th Goal in
50 Games, Tying Rocket's Feat

WINNIPEG: Bobby Hull capped a hat trick by scoring his third goal with 1:33 remaining in the game, his 50th goal in 50 games. The feat matched Maurice Richard's hallowed 50 goals in 50 games accomplishment set in 1944-45.

PHOENIX: Six Roadrunners players scored two goals apiece as the Runners whipped the Racers, 12-2. Robbie Ftorek, Dennis Sobchuk, Jim Boyd, Michel Cormier, John Gray and Bob Mowat all scored twice. Ftorek added four assists for a six-point day, while Dennis Sobchuk had three assists for five points.

WINNIPEG: Bobby Hull scored his major-league record 77th goal late in the second period as the Jets and Mariners skated to a season-ending 5-5 draw. San Diego's Andre Lacroix had three points on a goal and two assists to capture the league scoring title, with Hull coming in second.
