San Pedro River Walk
Cochise County, Arizona • November 10, 2024

The San Pedro River runs through Cochise County, originating in Mexico and connecting to the Gila River near Winkelman. Most of its course in Cochise County is protected as the San Pedro Riparian Conservation Area, administered by the BLM with help from local volunteers.

The river is lined with giant cottonwood trees, and the river itself runs all year, sometimes just a trickle, but always there in some form. There are a few places to access the river and its trails. I chose to come in from highway AZ-80 between Bisbee and Sierra Vista. There is an old ranch house now used as a visitor's center, called the San Pedro House. It's all very well done.

I hiked some paths and old roads in a 3-mile circuit. I was trying to time my visit here with the fall colors. The trees were starting to turn yellow, but that was about it. Nevertheless, the trees are beautiful things to view and walk among. The trails are all well built and easy to follow. I recommend picking up a free trail guide because there are a few turns that could be confusing.

I spent about 90 minutes here and enjoyed it very much. I can see myself coming back more often, even in summer. It would be very warm but mostly level hiking in shade.
