Excerpts from Pro Hockey, WHA 1976-77 (by Dan Proudfoot)
Stingers gave up Gene Sobchuk, Dennis's 25-year-old brother, to get Bryan Maxwell, a 21-year-old to add to their stock of youngsters on defense.
"Really, I don't think our fans could forgive us if we'd passed on a deal like this," says Jerry Rafter, the team's director of player personnel. "You can find guys who can skate, or you can get a guy who's big, but in Bryan Maxwell we have a big guy who can skate. Over 1975-76, I think he was the most-improved defenseman in the league. He was highly-rated as a junior, and deservedly so."
